Keyboard offers numbers only during two step verification

I'm trying to complete the two step verification for my telephone number during the initial set up of my refurbished A03s.  Only the numbers keyboard appears and I can see no setting available to change from numbers to letters on the keyboard. This means I can't complete my new phone set up. Although I am able to enter my complete phone number, I can not enter the complete verification code that contains both numbers and letters as provided on my iPhone while following the steps for completing the two step verification.

Yes I think 2 step vertification only allows your phone number

That's very interesting. The first thing I could think about is resetting the 2 step verification within your accounts? (Getting rid of it and then re- adding it)
I can't recall if this is possible but according to online resources it should let you press and hold the numbers and let you click the corresponding letter?
