Hello,

My A54 loses all GPS functionality if i use any GPS app (like Google Maps) with prolonged (> 5-30 minutes) screen-off.

When this happens, Maps and all other apps that use GPS only get GPS signal again after closing all apps that use GPS.

 i have tried/checked that:

Energy saver is OFF

Data saver is OFF

Adaptive baterry OFF

Unused apps to sleep OFF (also tried adding apps to never sleeping, no luck)

Battery usage UNRESTRICTED/unoptimized

Allow background data ON

Allow background usage ON

Location permission set to Always for concerned apps

I have done a Factory Reset today, All resulting in the exact same issue. Im starting to think my unit is defective as i cant find any similar complains and this is very basic functionality.

Can anyone confirm that they are using navigation with prolonged screen-off without issues? As long as the screen is on, the apps work fine.

Any help appreciated, thanks.

Try Settings>Battery and device care>Battery>Background usage limits>check both Sleeping apps and Deep sleeping apps lists and verify that Maps does not appear in either list.

I can confirm that it does not. Fyi as soon as Battery is set to unrestricted, the apps no longer appear in (deep)sleeping list.

As a work around i tried putting it to optimised and adding the apps to 'never sleeping but no luck.

I have just changed my A53 to A54 recently and tried Google maps yesterday for navigation with the screen off for around 20 mins with no issues. I normally use Google maps with the screen on for navigation.

I have resorted to using a 3rd party app to lock my GPS fix. Hoping future update will restore my screen-off GPS functionality without extra apps.

Hello, I am having similar issues. GPS is loosing signal and even if when found a signal, the location freezes when I am driving. I have been using phone for two days, and am having constantly issues with GPS and Google maps.

Could you tell me what app did you use?

Same here. While using the same app (osmand+) with display on everything works fine, gps functionality (hw/sw) seems to be stopped after short time when display is off. IMHO a bug of the A54. - GPS works again if switched off manually and switched on again. Returning to navigation app the actual position is updated instantly (freezed until then). Unfortunately after a short time (minutes) gps is stopped again (if display is off).

I'm pretty sure my A52 5G did the same. I was trying to set up a Bixby Routine (Now called Modes and Routines) so my hallway light smart bulb would turn on when I reached my home location. It never seemed to work and it appeared that the location function wasn't working when the screen was off. I tried automatically turning on Google Maps to keep my screen on til I got home. I had turned on the Bixby option to work with the screen locked too.

In the end I sorted it by creating a routine that turns on mobile data and location automatically for when I leave work, as this gave a perfect location result, and on reaching home, the routine for arriving at my home location and turning on the hallway light worked. Another routine, also activated when I reached my home location would turn on WiFi. Mobile Data usage was also very minimal, it made very little difference to my data allowance.

So could you use mobile data turned on, together with location turned on to achieve what you want? If you have downloaded a custom map area on Google maps it shouldn't use your mobile data.

I used Google Maps myself sometimes for navigation, but I kept the screen on, even though i ride a motorcycle and keep the phone in my pocket, and just use the sound in my earphones for navigation. I just had location turned on and it worked.

I haven't used Google Maps on my new A54 yet, but the same location routines work with the screen off. The only issue I have is that SmartThings won't turn on my light if the phone is locked, but a screen on time of 10 minutes and lock time of after 30 minutes fixed that.

Perhaps you could create a routine that when Google Maps is opened, the screen is automatically set to a minimum value. For example:

If Google Maps is opened, then.. wait 2 minutes.. set brightness to 10%. The brightness would be reset after closing Google Maps.
