Hi

My fairly new A53 5G unexpectedly lost all of its charge last night. It was on low power mode, 3G network and wifi disabled. It should have been ok for 2 weeks but this morning the battery had drained to zero. How/why can that happen? It was purchased in Nov 2022 and has been fine up until now.

I'm not sure on the cause if its stopped happening.

I'd say keep an eye on it and if it happens again, record the steps that you took before it happened and we can see if we can recreate it. In the meantime, use the phone as normally and hopefully it was just a one off.

We can explore next steps if it does happen again, but no need to speculate so far I'd say. Of. Course feel free to comment here or direct message me if you have any other thoughts!

A one off? Doesn't compute! Am I right that if it lost the mobile network connection it would keep retrying to connect ad infinitum (until the battery died)? That would be a poor design and I'm worried the battery might be damaged now.

It wouldn't likely be the cause of your battery drain if this was the case.
The battery wouldn't be damaged because of this, but if you want to do a test of the phone, you can use the diagnostics in the Members app. Any issues, you can reach the support team on Facebook, twitter or Instagram @samsunguk

Oh, I already had it but never knew! It passes but it's not clear what/how it tests the battery. Oh well I'll leave it for now and will get back to you if it fails again. I've rather lost confidence in it now.

It could of been a rogue app that suddenly caused the battery drain. That is why I mentioned a restart of the phone can help stop any potential problems.
I would turn off power saving mode. That could be preventing apps from doing some background activity that is necessary. So the app will keep attempting to do it stuff. Only to have the power saving mode stop it. It can end up in a vicious circle, with the battery drain result.
I personally never use power saving mode.

I don't know. It's been fine until yesterday and since I bought it in November. It's not on power saving mode all the time. I'll always temporarily switch it off to do something like use the camera. I don't have many downloaded apps. It's a mystery.

I notice if I switch off WiFi overnight on my S22. The battery drains much more in comparison to having it connected to WiFi.
It may be just an anomaly and won't happen again, or at least not as bad.
Always keep apps updated too can help.

I only put wifi on to download data/update. Otherwise it's just on 2G/3G.
