Why are phones getting so thin?

Hi everyone,

One thing really frustrates me — Samsung (and most phone makers) keep pushing for thinner and thinner designs. Personally, I’d much rather have a slightly thicker device if it meant:

  • A much bigger battery (so I don’t need to worry about running out by the end of the day)
  • Better cooling to keep performance consistent without throttling
  • A sturdier build that doesn’t risk bending under pressure
  • Extra features that sometimes get removed for the sake of slimness (bigger speakers, headphone jack in the past, larger heat pipes, etc.)

I don’t understand why thinness is treated like the ultimate design goal when thinness removes features and performance. A larger flagship with a 6000–7000mAh battery and proper cooling would be an instant buy for me.

So I’m curious:

  • Are there any current or upcoming phones (flagship level) that actually prioritize battery life, durability, and performance over being super slim?
  • Do you think Samsung will ever make a thicker flagship?

I’d love to hear what the community thinks. Am I the only one who wants thicker, stronger phones with bigger batteries and zero compromises — instead of shaving off millimetres for looks?

Thanks!

so, i totally get what u mean dude, and sadly, phones r definitely gonna get thinner. so about battery, Samsung hopefully'll switch to the silicon carbon batterys, which basically means u can fit way more milliamp hours into a smaller space, so battery should be better while the phone gets thinner
and tbh they could make a new heatsync or somethin to make the cooling better, but idk, cooling already isnt great on my s24 ultra tbh
and for strength? fr, ur totally right, idk any way they could make a phone stronger by making it thinner - unless they make the phones as ugly lookin as the iphone 17s 🤮

But look at the iPhone air, they've had to remove so much battery, performance, cooling and other features, just to make it thin, who cares if the phone is super thin when it removes all of that, I don't want a 5mm phone with no features, hardly any performance and bad cooling. Give me a phone that's thick enough to not need a camera bump, battery lasts all day, doesn't get super hot

totally get wym btw dude, just i feel like Samsung knows this and'll probably do a way better job - think Samsung's AI vs Apples AI, lets be honest, Samsung freaking murders Apples AI. So if they do end up making the phones super thin, they'll have thought (the s25 edge being an exception) how to get as little of a compromise as they can u know what im sayin?
plus its obvious, Samsung is a smart company - theyre not gonna go make everything worse just for thinness unless thats the whole focus of the dang phone (talking about the s25 edge), so if i was u, i wouldnt be too worried 😜✌️

Hi @xNightWulf,

Thanks for sharing — you're definitely not alone in wanting thicker phones with better battery life, cooling, and durability.

While most flagships still prioritize slim designs, there’s growing interest in performance-focused devices. Gaming phones or rugged models sometimes fit that niche, but they’re not mainstream flagships.

I will share your feedback with our team of developers 😊.

No, not everyone looks at specs for their phone.
The S25 Edge (and now the Air) are appealing to a different market.
The way I see it, they're meant for city folk, business and office workers that prefer style over substance but not so much it doesn't feel worth it.
Its meant for people who are never far from a charger but still want to take decent photos.
They want premium design over anything

ngl bro, i dont rly like bein straight up cos it can come off as offensive, but im not tryna be mean when i say this, u r overreacting.
reason bein is thin phones (like Eltas said) is a completely different market, and yeah phones'll end up getting a little thinner but not to the extent of like the s25 edge ykwis
cos samsung isnt gonna go ahead and compromise every freaking thing on the phone just to make it 4 mm thinner, theyre not stupid bro, if it has huge compromises, why in the hell would they do jt?
and the iphone air and the s25 edge r exceptions because (like i said) different markets
