My Dell XPS 13 9350 laptop was delivered new in 2016 and was fitted with a Samsung SSD PM 951 NVMe 1Tb. Idling speed of this drive was around 45 to 50C. Under load - video editing for example, the temperature varied from 55 to 60C.
Two months ago I replaced the PM 951 with a Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus NVMe 2Tb. This drive idles around 55 to 60 C. Under load it rises to 65to 70C.
While running Samsung Magician performance benchmark just now it rose to 76C.
Is this normal? Does Samsung consider this to be acceptable given that Magician says "too high"?

80deg is HOT. You should expect this to severely impact the life of the drive. Is that a temperature reading under load or idling. These drives are designed to throttle back their performance if they get hot so it seems extraordinary that you can get a reading like that. It must be degrading IO speed.

Hi Ashish I agree 80C is hot. Cooling is needed and that depends what computer you have. I have a Desktop computer and I use CPUID Hardware Monitor to display system temperatures. At the moment my M2 SSD temp is 33C and ambient is 16.5C giving a temp rise of 16.5C. I have removed the Samsung label with it's thin copper layer and replaced it with a heatsink with a fan like this one: Air Circulation Cooler Heatsink Gasket | M.2 Ssd Cooling Heatsink - M.2 Heat Sink - Aliexpress I also have made sure that there is plenty of air circulation in the computer case. hope this helps. Samsung claim that warranty is voided if you remove the label. However the SSD will last and perform better being cool. I have kept the label to place back on the SSD if there is a warranty problem.

Mine 970 evo 2Tb with BeQuiet radiator has 69C in idle and is installed on M2 slot inside regular PC ( not laptop )

You need to install a cooler with fan. Example: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005002740959370.html?spm=a2g0o.productlist.main.25.2e4165feequc3S&a...

In a PC, this would work, but with a Laptop, nope.

People are used to it. Just read the thread. In any case anyone have any way to lower it more? Mine's still running at 50+degC.

I cut down an old heatsink to approx 22 X 80 and applied it to my new 970 EVO plus M.2 stick with Thermal Conductive Adhesive Tape & EUREKA it the got idle temp down from 50 degrees to 40 Celsius !
