it keeps on saying that there isn't a compatible fingerprint scanner when there clearly is a scanner on my laptop

What laptop specifically. Show the page you bought it from

That's a bad start... eBay. Check Device Manager - any sign of it being there? If not, try downloading drivers from the Samsung website for the Galaxy Book - if still nothing, return the laptop.

should the book4 have a fingerprint sensor cos I been told by Samsung it don't when I chatted to a support agent

I'm not sure. I do not see it in the specs, but I'd assume you checked this before buying the laptop?
