HW-Q90R & Sky Q 2TB Issues

My current setup:

+ Samsung QE75Q90R QLED TV, Firmware 1318

+ Samsung HW-Q90R Soundbar, Firmware 1007.9

+ Sky Q 2TB. Resolution: UHD 2160p, 10bit colour. Sound: Dolby Digital +. HDMI Control: Off.

+ New HDMI v2.1 48 Gbps cables (8K) x 3 (connections between all devices)

I’m getting similar issues as discussed in various threads. However, the ARC lip-sync issues seem to be slightly different, whilst the alternate SkyQ -> SoundBar -> TV setup connection is quite problematic for a variety of reasons. I’d be interested to see if anyone is experiencing similar or can suggest anything for what I’m finding?

Setup 1:

SkyQ -> HDMI Direct Connection -> TV

TV ARC -> HDMI Direct Connection -> Soundbar.

In this setup the TV is having to pass through sound from SkyQ to the sound bar via ARC. Any HD programs encoded with Dolby Digital (or DD+) cause the well reported lip sync issues. However, I believe the problem is ‘almost’ fixable if you change the TV’s HDMI/SPDIF audio delay to a value between 40 to 60 ms. At the 40 end the audio is coming out ahead of lip motion, 60 is behind – annoyingly there is no value that is exactly right. This seems to be slightly different than most reports that indicate you need a negative value to fix the lip sync (not possible as the value settings don’t go negative). More annoying is that different Sky HD channels also seem to vary in their lip sync delay so you have to keep altering the TV HDMI audio delay in the 40 to 60 range to get a channel catered-for fix…

I did try setting the TV HMDI delay to 0 ms and Sky Q’s own HDMI delay to 60 ms and it was looking nearly spot on for a couple of HD test channels. However, if I disable the sound bar for late night viewing (family gone to bed, reduce noise etc) then I would assume Sky delays the sound output even out of the TV’s own speakers – which normally do not need a delay? All too fiddly at the moment…

Also worth noting: if you look at the Wikipedia article on HDMI it clearly states that HDMI v2.1 cables are required to support eARC. As we are now seeing some forum posts about Samsung releasing a firmware update in November for proper eARC support it is also worth trying to get further clarification on the exact HDMI version required from Samsung. I only very recently bought the TV & Soundbar via the Samsung promotion (50% off soundbar) so bought HDMI v2.1 cables on the assumption Samsung had already added eARC support to the TV & Soundbar via firmware updates (as the forums had indicated).

Setup 2:

SkyQ -> HDMI Direct Connection -> Soundbar

Soundbar -> HDMI Direct Connection -> TV ARC

This is the preferred setup, but its currently unusable due to it consistently breaking Sky…

At the start of the day, after powering on all devices at the plugs, everything works fine. Sky Q sound is coming out the soundbar in the correct lip sync timings and the whole system works fine.

However, once any part of the system is put into standby (usually all 3 devices) and I come back later in the day to put Sky Q back on the TV will not correctly connect to Sky Q or show any picture etc. You instead get some message about ensuring the power is on for that HDMI connection.

At this point I then get various weird effects / behaviours such as:

+ Trying to set the soundbar source to HDMI-1 where Sky Q is plugged in won’t ‘stick’ and instead cycles on to HDMI-2 where nothing is plugged in.

+ Doing the above, and/or turning the sound bar off and on again also seems to intermittently turn Sky on/off. Sometimes the initial selection of HDMI-1 itself will turn Sky from on to off (completely the opposite of what you’d expect).

+ Further experimentation with the above, or just after some random time has elapsed, Sky Q will be showing a green On light but has actually locked up completely and won’t respond to its own remote control or it’s on-device buttons. The only way to fix it at this point is to pull the Sky Q plug out of the mains…. For the alternate setup of having Sky directly HDMI’d to the TV this problem never happens.

+ To get Sky working with the TV & soundbar again I need to unplug all the kit and start again.

Final Thoughts

It’s quite disappointing to find all this having waited a very long time to upgrade from my 10 year old Samsung 55” and having burnt nearly 5K on new kit!

I’m hoping Novembers firmware updates for the TV and/or soundbar will help with these issues, particularly by adding proper support for eARC.

Worth noting that the sound from the TV’s inbuilt apps for Netflix, Amazon, Apple TV and Rakuten all seem to pass back via ARC to the sound bar without lip sync issues. However, I’m assuming that without eARC we’ll only ever get DD or perhaps DD+ but never Dolby Atmos?

Hi,

Iv'e not seen any difference in picture quality by connecting through the soundbar, I'm using both sky q and Apple TV 4K through the q90r to get Dolby Atmos and the quality on both to my eyes anyway is no different to being directly connected to the tv.

No. Not at all. I had it operating both ways and could see no difference. You will be aware Sky only outputs in Ultra 4k so if you happen to have the Netflix app thro Sky, it only outputs 4k whereas the same preloaded app on the high spec Samsungs outputs in HDR, where applicable.

Just to clarify, Any Sky Series in Dolby Atmos operate perfectly where I have the SkyQ box directly input into the TV connect box. The sound output is not affected provided you have a hdmi cable linking tv and soundbar via arc.

Thanks

I'm having the same issue with Sky Q and my Q90R sound bar not not connecting when changing inputs. I need to reset the sky q box to get it working again. Sky came and replaced the box but the issues persist so I'm guessing it's a sound bar issue? Anyone have a fix? It's doing my head in

Did you ever get this issue resolved? I have just purchased the QE65Q85R tv and HW-Q70R sound bar. I've been advised by Samsung to bypass the OneConnect and put Sky Q directly into the sound bar. This cures the lip sync issue but created its own issues with the Sky box not turning on and HDMI 3 which is the sound bar now sharing with Sky not being recognised by the tv. The only way of curing this was to reboot the Sky Q. Even then that wasn't guaranteed. Or doing a full reset of the tv, sound bar and Sky Q. Not what you want to be doing for the first hour of your day! It was Kirsty Caswell an alleged senior exec at Samsung who suggested the bypass which doesn't work. I personally don't see why we should have to do a workaround on a new expensive system that cost nearly £2k. Be good to hear from anyone that "fixed" it.

I've plugged my sky Q box directly into the soundbar's HDMI 1 port and the soundbar is connected  via the  arc connection to the one Connect box. Everything is fine except about once a month on certain channels it sounds like the dialogue is in a glass fish bowl.

I switch off everything at the mains for 10 seconds and then back on again and everything is back to normal, like I said this only happens once a month and  I would like to know how to resolve this but in the meantime I can live with this.

No, unfortunately I never got this issue resolved properly. My setup remains very similar to what a lot of people are suggesting to avoid lip sync issues AND prevent Sky Q crashing / locking up:

I'm still using an optical audio cable to pass through 5.1 sound (not Atmos) from Sky Q to the soundbar to avoid Sky Q being plugged directly into the soundbar HDMI and typically locking itself up (full Sky Q power off and restart required to fix). There are no lip sync issues from Sky Q via optical audio. You do have to manually set the TV volume to 0 with the TV remote then up the soundbar volume with the separate remote else the sound comes out from both...

My Q90R TV is connected to the soundbar via HDMI & ARC hence the TV's inbuilt apps for Netflix, Amazon Video and Disney+ all pass sound directly to it without problems. I can get ATMOS on supported programs with this setup.

It is quite annoying having to use the sound bar remote control to manually switch between optical and HDMI audio (hold right arrow/button for > 5 seconds) every time you switch between watching Sky Q or one of the TV's built in apps. This is about the best solution that I can work with. That said, this is ok for me to do but if the wife wants to use the TV without me there it's easier for her to just use the TV speakers and leave the power off to the sound bar (at the wall, prevents HDMI Control starting it) .

Given my past history with Sony issues and now these issues with Samsung I'd be inclined to consider LG (perhaps) in the future for our next purchase. That said, hopefully the current 4K TV & soundbar will last at least 10 years (as our last HD Samsung did)... The LG OLED tech' puts me off due to screen burn issues but in the future we might have better options e.g. mini/micro LED or whatever.

Hello folks,

Please can someone point me to the list of supported TV models for this soundbar HW-Q90R, I have TV Samsung QE75Q7FAM.

I have simple setup, this TV and PS3 console. Also I play music/movies from USB and spotify. Is there any know issues on this soundbar and generally would you recommend buying it?

Thanks in advance for your feedback,

Regards,
Vitali
