...the bouncer looks at Dolby Atmos trailing behind them, and says, "yer not gettin' in 'ere m8".
Okay, so a while ago I bought a Q800C soundbar with additional rear speakers. I had my PC (Windows 10, 3080) connected directly to the soundbar, then the soundbar connected to my old Sharp TV. I got lovely 7.1 audio, but the Sharp TV didn't look that great and only supported HDMI 2.0, so I've now bought a QN85D.
I changed the setup so the soundbar was connected to the eARC port, then the PC directly into another 2.1 port. Everything visually works perfectly - the TV looks amazing - but at first, the PC would only recognise 5.1 audio rather than the 7.1 I had previously... and that's when I learned all about the massive issues that recent NVIDIA GPUs specifically have with Samsung TVs. Excellent.
I managed to get it to recognise 7.1 audio by using ToastyX's Custom Resolution Utility to override the EDID, as the QN85D only reports 6 LPCM channels to the PC. I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get Dolby Atmos to work with this setup, though. 'Dolby Atmos for home theater' shows up in the device properties under supported formats, but clicking it does nothing.
I ran the HDMI cables directly through the soundbar to the TV like I used to have it, and Dolby Atmos works perfectly like that. Fully selectable in the properties, all test videos sound excellent, the few Atmos games I have sound amazing... but because the Q800C only has HDMI 2.0 connectors, I'm slightly back in the same boat as I was before, with no delicious 120Hz.
I tried messing with the Custom Resolution Utility a bit more (noted down what the supported audio formats reported by the EDID were while connected directly to the soundbar and then making sure that the TrueHD and E-ARC-3 entries matched up when the PC was connected to the TV directly), but that didn't work.
I'm glad that my audio experience hasn't downgraded, but it would be nice to be able to get Dolby Atmos working through the eARC setup rather than directly passing through the soundbar. Has anybody got a similar problem and managed to solve it?
