Some apps won't work as I am running 2008 firmware on this TV. So I decided to try to upgrade it.

I have downloaded the firmware update from here https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/model/UE46ES8000UXXU/

I followed these instructions to the letter http://downloadcenter.samsung.com/content/FM/201303/20130306104951191/2012_TV_Firmware_Upgrade_Instr...

I made sure to format my USB drive as FAT32 and make sure my drive only contained a single folder containing the upgrade files, as recommended by others. The TV cannot find the firmware upgrade when I select upgrade by USB.

Did this work for you? I've been trying to update mine and don't want to buy a smaller USB just to find out it won't work.

Make sure that your drive is formatted using a guid partition table and exfat. Size of the drive doesn't matter. Then after you've unzipped your firmware, drop the folder labeled "image" onto the usb drive. Inside the image folder contains the file labeled upgrade.msd. Nothing else should be on the drive or in that folder. After you insert the drive in the tv, it'll ask you how you wanna use the drive, just press exit on the remote and then navigate to settings, support and software update, it'll find the firmware once you get to that point.

This guide here does go into a bit more detail, so see what luck you have with this one.

Then finally, as a last resort, if you get in touch on 0333 000 0333, they can send a USB out to you with the upgrade file that should work. However, this can sometimes take a (not so) short while to get out to you.

I add my 2(euro)cents after going mad after this upgrade...

After all browsing and tries, the culprit is the size of the USB stick, nobody has handy an old 512MB stick in some trashbin, so the final solution was to CLEAN a 32GB stick with DISKPART  make a CREATE DISK=x PARTITION PRIMARY SIZE=512, let the PC format and WOWOWWW the TV recognize a directory with a IMAGE folder with the proper extracted firmware (.exe). Now it works...(but not on my fiancè TV 😞  so not all firmware and Model are equal...)

You are a genius! THIS!! I was wondering why I wasn't seeing an unzip option when right clicking. I have an OOOOLLLLD samsung TV and couldn't get any sort of internet to update the darn thing. So I looked into updating with a USB. Tried everything and still had the error message come up saying that it couldn't find any firmware. Hit the internet to figure it out, and your answer was 100% the fix. Thanks for the solid info!

I have tried all the USB sticks and possible partition formats to no avail.

What worked for me using the 8 GB stick:

- use diskpart utility to flatten the drive (remove partition, create a new one (I tried MBR), make it active)

- format drive in FAT32 partition

- move the firmware onto the stick using the Samsung self-extracting archive.

That's all. Shame on you Samsung for making FW upgrade an half day long endeavor. BTW, online update fails despite working LAN connection (connection test passes OK).
