Since the last software update in December we have had charging issue with 2 tab a tablets.
Last night I turned mine off and plugged it in to charge. This morning I checked and it said 100%. I unplugged and switched it on and the charge showed 40%.
The other tablet is doing the same. Both tablets updated in December and that is when this began.

Sometimes if a Tablet is glitching then its advisable to check the port for debris and try another charging cable.
If no joy then Create Back-ups and Factory Reset.
If no joy then a Samsung Experience Store or Samsung Service Centre location can run a diagnostic on the devices.

Thanks for the advice. Since it was 2 tablets using different cables and chargers I thought it may be something more.
I've checked for debris and I'm currently charging my tablet with another cable via my PC

I understand what your saying.
The steps I outlined are simply a process of elimination to help rule out what it could be to hopefully reach the end conclusion of what it is.
