I didn not ask for this new update to lock me out of it just cause we were traveling.

You will need to contact the seller as only the original purchaser will be able to possibly unlock it.
This is a customer to customer forum and Samsung Customer Support doesn't monitor here.
It will be the original purchaser that has reported it lost or stolen

Hi! Welcome to the samsung members community!

This is a forum for the public, samsung wont see.

Cannot say why its been locked-- youd need to reach out to customer support and have them assist. *the orignal owner (seller maybe) can only unlock

*amazon isnt always a safe place to buy from

Hey there and welcome to the Samsung UK and EU Community Forum

As above, you'll need to reach out to the original buyer.

It is possible this may be an insurance scam.

Device purchased
Buyer reports lost or stolen
Claims on insurance
Receives payout
Sells device
Receives payment

Insurance company lock the device.

I'm not saying this definitely is the case here but it may well be. An update would not lock your device in this way.

Please note that this is the UK Community Forum, as you are in the US you need to reach out to the US Forum.

That said, Samsung have asked you to send it to them with your receipt. You refuse. So you're at an impasse and no other help will be available to you.

Whilst you have a receipt, samsung have to consider all sorts of fraudulent ways people try to scam manufacturers.

(not suggesting you are scamming, Samsung have to consider all potential outcomes here to protect the true owner).

Samsung takes security very seriously and will need certain information in order to proceed with anything like this.
Ultimately, it's unlikely they can help and the only hope you have is returning it for a refund.
Perhaps look at a more reputable retailer that's trustworthy
While Amazon is reputable, it's third party sellers on its platform that you have to be very careful with
