Video file size getting larger after cutting?

I cut a 2mb video to make it shorter and the cut video is 10mb! How did it get bigger? What kind of stupid encoder does Samsung use? And why does it take so long to cut it too?

you need to change the resolution as it is upscaling it to a higher resolution when it's saving the clip. This isn't stupid or a fault with the encoder, as you seem to be suggesting, but more a case of the user not being aware of how to properly use the options at their disposal.

why does it default to a high res? why would I encode something that's at a lower res to something higher? it can't magically add pixels and detail. it should default to the res the clip is. so yes the system is stupid.

A lot of content gets upscaled using smart algorithms which allows for exactly that function, Mustafa. This is not only done by graphics cards in videos games & televisions upscaling content from lower resolution to 4K or even 8K but also movie studios when they remaster old movies & re-release them. I'm not saying Samsung's approach is the only way but I much rather have the options available via the editor than not. Maybe having a default setting option would help users like yourself who aren't able to navigate the options available to them effectively.

@MustafaIslam,

This is actually a normal operation of the device and it is beneficial to users. However, I'll forward your suggestion to our development team so that the user can choose if they want to make the video file larger or smaller after cutting it 😉.

I think having the ability to set a default setting in the editor application is probably the best way as the user can then change the setting to other resolution before saving it after editing if they wish to but otherwise it will save at the user default resolution setting.

I had the same problem as this guy.

While you were smug like most people in these places, you offered advice to fix it. Except you didnt actually.

1280x720. 55 second clips trimmed down to 35. EXACT same resolution. No upscaling. Still turned a 14mb filed in 33mb.

 Samsung video editor clearly makes changes to the file that increase its size with encoding.

Youre wrong and arrogant. Terrible combo.

Exactly my thought and why I'm here too. It's not upscaling the resolution or the bit rate based on the properties of the original and the post processing copy from samsung gallery video editor. 346.71mb to 544.19mb. Both are MP4, 30fps, 852x480, H264, AAC,

In editor, I cut the first 11 seconds just to have a visible thumbnail in gallery because the video starts blank and the thumbnail is based on the first second if the video.

The only setting you can change in my scenario regarding "size and format" is to select HEVC which claims to reduce storage footprint. I've done this also and it still increases from original size by atleast 20%. Also it takes forever to process. I cut like 10 seconds and it'll take 15 minutes to process and save the copy.
