This may be me not being able to find it, but does anyone know how to set Bixby as my voice assistant instead of Google Gemini/assistant. Because in the settings app, under digital assistant, there is Google, which it says it optimised for galaxy. I would expect Bixby to be here too. But then there is also other apps, such as ChatGPT and Alexa. But no Bixby. I have Bixby installed, and enabled, and I can use Bixby. But I want it as my digital assistant, and I just can't figure it out. Thanks.

@busby08,

At the moment, Bixby does not appear in the “Digital assistant app” section by design. This setting is intended for selecting third-party assistants (e.g., Google, Alexa, ChatGPT), while Bixby remains a system-integrated assistant with its own access methods.

Bixby can currently be set up via:

  • Settings → Advanced features → Side button

  • Voice wake-up (“Hi Bixby”)

  • Directly opening the Bixby app

At this time, it is not possible to set Bixby as the default assistant in the same way as Google within that specific menu.

Does Bixby became Plexy in OneUI 8.5 or it will only become so in OneUI 9?

On OneUI 8 Bixby is still dumb assistant and isn't available in settings digital assistant.  But, as you notice,  we can use Bixby no matter if Gemini is our default assistant. I'm not sure if you need set Bixby on side button if you want it as main digital assistant

So Bixby isn't actually as bad as people say it is, it is definitely more integrated with Samsung phones and can do more internal things. But I use one hand assistant, and one of the options is digital assistant. But that just uses whatever is set in settings, which is Google. But Bixby is meant to get an improvement, and I think that will either be coming with the stable oneui8.5, or oneui 9. I hadn't used Bixby much before one UI 8.5, so it could have already been given the update, but it definitely feels better than when I last used it, and I think it is better than Gemini in some ways

Bixby was never bad 🙂, it would flawlessly perform everything asked of him, I called it dumb only because you can't chat with it (yet) 😄

Samsung has shifted its strategy: rather than having Bixby and Gemini compete for the same tasks, they now function in complementary roles:

Bixby (The Device Agent): The new Bixby is designed to be the "glue" for your device. It has been rebuilt with natural language processing, allowing you to control system settings, understand device context, and perform tasks without needing to memorize specific menu names (e.g., asking "Why is my screen always on in my pocket?" will prompt Bixby to analyze your settings and offer to turn on Accidental Touch Protection). It also now includes integrated, real-time web search capabilities (powered by Perplexity) to keep answers contained within the Bixby interface.

Gemini (The Generative AI Layer): Gemini continues to serve as your primary conversational and generative AI assistant for broader knowledge, creative tasks, and integration across various apps (such as the Gallery, Calendar, Notes, and Reminders).

In short, they aren't "merging" into one single assistant; instead, Bixby is handling the deep system-level control, while Gemini manages broader intelligence tasks.

How to Set Bixby to the Power (Side) Button

Because Samsung has combined the power button and the previous Bixby button into a single "Side" button, you can easily configure it to launch Bixby.

Open Settings on your device. Tap on Advanced features. Tap on Side button. Under the Press and hold section, select Bixby.

Once this is set, a long press of the side button will summon the new, conversational Bixby. If you previously had this set to the "Power off menu," you can still access that menu by tapping the power icon in your Quick Settings panel (swiping down from the top of the screen).
