Google począwszy od systemu Android 10 wprowadził nową technologię zabezpieczenia użytkowników systemu. Funkcja o nazwie Project Mainline (nie mylić z Project Treble) pozwala na aktualizowanie określonych komponentów wewnętrznych urządzenia bez konieczności pobierania oprogramowania układowego i przechodzenia przez proces aktualizacji. Dzięki temu Google może w każdym momencie za pomocą sklepu Google Play udostępnić ważne poprawki bezpieczeństwa, które trafią do naszych urządzeń bez konieczności angażowania producenta telefonu czy operatora sieci komórkowej. Po wydaniu takiej aktualizacji trafia ona bezpośrednio do naszego telefonu lub tabletu. W urządzeniach funkcja nosi nazwę Aktualizacja systemu w Google Play (Google Play system updates). Na koncie Google jest widoczna pod nazwą Aktualizacje usług systemowych.
Aktualizacje są wykonywane automatycznie. Użytkownik może sprawdzić wersję aktualizacji oraz ręcznie sprawdzić dostępność nowszej wersji aktualizacji systemowych. Aby to zrobić należy w urządzeniu kolejno przejść do:
Android 12

Android 13+
Ustawienia > Bezpieczeństwo i prywatność > Aktualizacje > Aktualizacja systemu w Google Play.
Poprawki bezpieczeństwa udostępniane w ramach aktualizacji systemowych Google Play są uwzględniane w biuletynach bezpieczeństwa systemu Android. Aktualizacje udostępniane są w różnych odstępach czasowych w zależności od urządzenia. W większości przypadków nowe wersje pojawiają się raz w miesiącu.
