receiving messenger calls off my contacts but they arent calling me

Sounds strange but I've received messenger calls off my contacts and when I answer it fails to connect but my contacts arent calling me, I was literally stood next to my neighbour and his phone was on the side and it said he was messenger calling me I showed him and he tried to answer it ....... we are a little confused it's a samsung a21s btw  not sure if it's the app or the phone ?? It never happened in my old phone

I have had similar problems where I get a Messenger call, answer it but no one there.  When I messaged the person back they were adamant they hadn’t called me.   A couple of days later I was having a coffee with them, when my phone rang with a Messenger call from them,  I knew it couldn’t be from them as their phone was on the table in view of us both.   When I returned the call, their phone rang.

we both have Samsung phones.
