@drain2113: I'm not sure if this is applicable to outgoing messages, however I recommend heading to Settings > Apps > Gmail > Email > Alert (On) > Sound > Choose your preferred option. Go back and apply the same settings to 'Miscellaneous' and let me know if this helps.
