@Casjen: If you have Fingerprint Unlock set up as a Biometric Security option, then the scanner needs to be visible on the Lock Screen in order to be able to unlock the device. To check out your available options, head to Settings > Biometrics and Security > Fingerprints > Show Icon When Screen Is Off.

There is an option to turn it off on the AOD display. Why doesnt this logic apply to the lock screen. You know where it is on the AOD for people who use the AOD. So why advertise to people you have the scanner active on the lock Screen? Again you know where it is. There should be at least the option to dim it. The setting you link to applies only to AOD.

@Casjen: The Always On display is an additional lock screen feature that allows you to check notifications, time etc without having to turn on your screen, and is a useful battery and screen saving feature. As a result you can hide the Fingerprint Scanner on the AOD, as it is an optional feature, but for the lock screen it must remain visible. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause you.
