How can I stop the camera on my Samsung S21 deciding to rotate photos I take? This is incredibly annoying, it does it a lot and there is no sense to it. I've looked for a setting in the camera setting but can't find anything.
Is this a Samsung problem or an Android problem does anyone know?
PLEASE can someone help? Thanks

For some time i've had the same problem. At least i think it's the same. Its infuriating!!!
A whole bunch of videos and pictures taken with the phone's camera utterly refuse to display correctly. No matter which orientation i hold the phone, the pic/video is ALLWAYS ON ITS SIDE! Worse, when uploaded to my desktop the videos play upside down!!! Do i now have to learn video editing so i can fix those??
Ive tried changing the phone's orientation settings ,restarting the phone, installing the latest video player and it still wont work right

Sooo frustrating! Currently same problem on the S23.
Not only while I'm taking a picture but also while I'm viewing the portrait pictures I already took, if I'm laying down sideways "THE APP" rotates automatically even though I locked the screen to stay in portrait mode only.
If I can't fix it, I'll try to find a third party app. This would be the second time I replace a built-in app for a third party one.

It has NOTHING to do with auto rotate. I do not have auto rotate enabled unless I need it for a bit, then I disable it.
I have a Galaxy S23, and had the same problem with my S22.
All of you defending the poor engineering of the interaction between the phone and the camera do NOT understand what the complaint is.
The problem is that the phone rotates photos and videos to the left 90 degrees when the file is created.
Additionally, with auto rotate disabled and using the photo viewer while still in the camera app, if I rotate the phone 90 degrees to look at the photo just taken the image rotates and I still can not see it in the orientation that I took the photo in.
This is more than just annoying or frustrating. It is down right ridiculous.

I am right there with you. I undertook a project to photograph a lot of old family ephemera: photos, newspaper clippings, etc., using my S23, and the same ***** thing is happening.
Although the orientation looks perfect on screen (and I carefully check to make sure it hasn't rotated), the resulting photographs often are flipped sideways or upside-down for no reason whatsoever. Whether landscape or portrait mode, this is happened. And it is SUPER annoying to have to fix.
I thought using my camera would be easier and more efficient that scanning everything, but maybe not.

So easy to do, so many useless replies!
Swipe down from top of your screen, where you check the time, turn on the Internet, Bluetooth, change the display brightness etc... press the "autorotate' button/icon. It will change to 'portrait'. Problem solved

That's not the issue here. The "autorotate button/icon" you're referring to from the top of the screen does not override the "photo app" autorotate feature; the "photo app" does not care about the global autorotate setting.

It works on my phone. Not sure what your issue is then.

Reading this thread was frustrating. I understand and have the same issue with my S23. I think I can elaborate. If I take pictures of things or people (someone mentioned people), it's usually fine. btw, I almost ALWAYS take pics in landscape mode. But if I'm trying to take a picture of an item/box/thing to sell on ebay or something, it will rotate it 90 degrees after the picture is taken so it's now portrait orientation and 90 degrees off. (this isn't selfie mode)
I tried turning off text reading/scanning. That didn't work but leaving it off. Turning global landscape off (usually on) or global autorotate off have no effect. I did find that if I don't zoom in as much (because I'm just wanting a picture of the item and no white space), it can get it right if I leave white space. This isn't ideal but it may help explain the problem. There's even text on the item so I don't know why the camera would think I wanted text at 90 degrees. I could turn off autorotate to look at it but when I post it to sell, it'll be off 90 degrees until I manually rotate it.
Zooming out doesn't seem like a great option for those wanting to scan stuff so in that case, i'd suggest an app meant to just scan as the white space defeats the point of it. I even made sure it wasn't my syncing (onedrive) that was doing it. It's happening on the phone before it syncs. I can instantly click on the image and WATCH it rotate the image. I haven't found any settings that would correct this in the native camera app. I'd rather the program assume that the current orientation was right and not modify the picture than trying to autocorrect it wrong most of the time when taking these types of pictures. I just took 30 pictures and they all had to be corrected in some way except for 2 that had too much white (table) space. 2 were 180 degrees off. Sadly, I'd rather rotate those images in explorer vs editing the image to cut out the things I don't want so the item is easier to see.
Monday
I want to leave it on for viewing videos, etc. There should be a separate feature for the cameras! I'll snap a pic and when I go to upload it or attach it, it's sideways! SUPER ANNOYING, I have to manually edit it to rotate it. We want to shut that feature off, why is it rotating the pics without us asking?
