Using 'Wallet'

Please advise if my lock screen has to be protected if I want to use 'Wallet' or can I do without the lock ???

You will still need to unlock your lock screen. Although you can add the samsung quick access to lock screen. Meaning you just open wallet from the bottom quick access and use your finger print to pay. Or you could make it possible to open samsung wallet through the side key by double tapping if you prefer that method. Your phone will still be protected but these two methods just means you do not need to unlock your lock screen to use samsung wallet.
