Shared Album - what happens if?

Background: I recently lost all my photos for the past 2 years because my old phone started boot looping and I couldn't access anything on the phone. To prevent this from happening again, I was hoping to use the shared album as a way for my husband and I to both add photos and have them stored somewhere else, besides locally. 

My main concern is, if what happened before happens again, where I lose all the photos on my local phone, would those same photos that I added to the shared album be removed or are they now saved as an extra copy elsewhere?

If you back up the photos to your account.
Then it doesn't matter what happens to the phone as a new phone will restore from the backup.
Alternatively you could use an SSD drive to copy the photos to and at least you will have that as a backup if you do t want to use any cloud backup service

I use Google photos. You get 5gb free but upgraded to 100gb for £1.59 a month.
