To check the pump on a washing machine, you can use a multimeter to test the drain pump, or you can check the pump filter:
Test the drain pump
Turn the washing machine onto its side and remove the bottom cover.
Disconnect the electrical connection from the drain pump.
Set the multimeter to 2k.
Insert the multimeter's prongs into the socket where the electrical connection was.
If the multimeter reads between 160 and 260 ohms, the drain pump is working properly. If it reads lower, the pump is faulty and needs to be replaced.
Check the pump filter
Put a towel down to catch any water.
Unscrew the filter counterclockwise.
Remove the main sump hose.
Check for obstructions and clean them.
Refit the filter.
Shine a torch into the pump and use a small screwdriver to turn the impeller.
Check for rubber bands wrapped around the impeller.
Signs that your washing machine's pump might be bad include:
Loud thumping sounds during drainage
The washing machine doesn't move
Deposits or residue on your clothes
An unusual smell from your clothes or machine
A build-up of leftover laundry detergent
Mold or mildew around the lid or door
The water doesn't drain fully from the machine
