Emoji sends automatically

When I select an emoji on my S9 when in Message it sends it to the recipient right away. I'm not done typing the message but the emoji and any partial text goes out without my hitting the send button. PITA. Any ideas?

That can't be ideal. Does this happen with the stock messaging app? Do you have theme on your phone? Are you using the stock Samsung Keyboard?
