Security ... encryption

I was watching a video to learn more about US Customs and their right to examine the phones of everyone entering the US and was advised to encrypt my phone.  

I naturally assumed my backups were encrypted but when I looked in my security settings, I had to enable that.

I was given a 28 character code that I was forced to write down (since I couldn't do a screenshot), and I now assume that I have even more protection.  

I would have thought this setting was by default on, but it wasn't.   Aren't backups by Samsung encrypted to begin with?

From what I can remember, backup data has never been hacked, samsung servers are safe. They were hacked a few years ago but no customer data was able to be taken

I'd say that's rather extreme. Tor is for if you're going to a country that heavily censors Internet like China. Just not connecting to free WiFi should keep you safe, mobile data is mostly trustable

Knox things are for businesses to manage employee devices. For a normal user, you wouldn't be able to use or access the extra things. Honestly a travel phone can be as cheap as you can find or want to deal with. Just kinda treat it as anything on it could be potentially viewed.

Again, the chances an airport search a phone are almost 0 so a travel phone is kinda just for if you have an extreme worry about your privacy and data.

So when I go to uyghur western China should I come with:Samsung Galaxy Note 10 with old Tor Beta apkmirror with Cyberghost or/and Surfshark and lower Android version and Knox and enhanced backup and business knox and developer mode off and no free WiFi secure?

Btw uyghur western China has generally tiny bit more restrictions and is less safe to go than eastern China/southern China
