Hi.

I am appealing to you guys who tether from your phone to your pc. Mine is working but I would like to find out how to use all of the available speed, if that's possible.

I have two phones, a Z Flip 2 and a S23 Ultra and both are giving roughly the same results around 800 Megabits per second.

When i connect to USB  or USB /c (both 3.2) on my pc I can't get above 320 - 350 Megabits per second, from either phone. The same speed happens on the USB2 sockets too.

Ideally, I would like to use the z flip as a mobile dongle and my s23u for normal use.

USB2 has a max of 480mbps and USB3.2 has a max of 20gbps - google || Of course I don't know if that is any data type transfer or just certain types. However on the face of it, it should be working.

Any ideas ?

TIA

Had a Z Flip4 arrive today so tested that and as expected, usb2.0 so no change. Then I realised I now have the cable so I can check what the s23ultra can do and sure enough, it has USB 3.2 so tried it and sure enough, hit 600mbps (typical speeds today) alas I neither want to use the s23 as a MIFI and it keeps disconnecting the tether for some reason, randomly a few or 10 or so more seconds after successful connection and won't reconnect unless I touch the tether choice again.

However this does mean definitively we have a solution.

A USB 3.2 cable and socket will allow speeds above 320-350mbps, 600mbps on this test today. I expect more on better connection days.

Thanks for the replies.

I have just realised this could be a USB cable issue. Like HDMI, certain cables are limited to certain speeds it seems. Something for me to consider.

Going to start with some things.

No Samsung phone supports over 5 gigabits. So USB 3.0 (USB names have changed so many times they are now just the speed). So USB 3, 3.1, and 3.2 don't mean anything anymore. It's USB 5 gigabit, 10 gigabit, 20 gigabit.

If a USB 2 and 3 port on your PC both give the same speed, your phone is probably using USB 2 the entire time. Make sure you have a USB 3 or 5 gigabit-rated cable. Normal cables only support USB 2.

In terms of Windows numbers, USB 2 yes has a maximum speed of 480 Mbps, but for file transfer, realistic speeds are maybe 30 MB/s.

For your specific issue, it just sounds like you don't have a USB 3/5 gigabit-rated cable.

Numbers might be a little off as there are a lot of numbers so main focus is you got the same speed on usb 2 and 3. Meaning usb 3 isn't used. Cable usually at fault

Hi and thank you for a fast response. As a result I have just ordered two 3.2 cables. One a/c and one c/c.

Again thank you. I will be back and mark this as the solution once tested.

Hope it all works out. The cable that comes with phones is always usb 2. So most people don't realise and never actually get usb 3 speeds working

I ordered two different 3.2 cables from ali and neither resulted in faster speed. Of course they could be fake but I doubt they are. I did a file transfer  472mb in 13.4 seconds and that showed as 290mbps.

Turns out the z flips upto the z flip4 are usb (c) 2.0 so that's the blockage in theory.
See if I can stretch to a 5 which has 3.2

Thanks Qanon
