I haven't actually used the hydrogel type, so these comments are only based upon my usage.
I usually use just flexible plastic protectors. The main reason is to stop the micro scratches to the screen. I am less bothered about major screen damage as I have insurance Care+ against broken glass... but cosmetic scratches are not covered.
I have in the past used also the whitestone dome expensive UV glass ones as well. These like you say tend to break quicker if they get a quick knock. I went through both of them within a couple of months.
The biggest hurdle these days is with the finger print scanning and sensitivity. Often the screen protectors stop this working or reduce its function.
Assuming the hydrogel ones don't stop the fingerprint unlocking then go for it. Or if you can go without the security of the finger print then you can disable it.
Sorry, not really that helpful advise, but I would just go with plastic cheap types to retain fingerprint security and protect tbe screen cosmetics. Of course a decent cover on the back can also protect the screen with a good ridge around the screen.
