Adding an overseas mobile number

Hey all 

Does anyone know how to add a mobile number from Chicago?

Before, on samsung phones, I'm sure I just typed in the number and it recognised it automatically, but its not recognising it.

I'm trying to save the number to my contacts.

Start with the country code first +1 then add the rest of the number.
