I've recently got my A16 5G and there's a setting that saves the battery where charging stops at 80%. I've read things about how it saves the battery long term but how true is this actually?

Charging a battery to 80% instead of 100% benefits the battery by significantly reducing stress on the battery cells, which slows down the degradation process and extends the overall lifespan of the battery by minimizing wear and tear during the charging cycle; essentially, the higher the charge level, the more strain is placed on the battery, so stopping at 80% helps maintain optimal battery health over time.

Reaching full capacity puts considerable strain on the battery's chemical reactions, while staying at a lower charge level like 80% creates less stress.

By minimizing stress, charging to 80% helps to slow down the natural process of battery capacity loss over time.

This slower degradation translates to a longer overall lifespan for your battery.

Personally I've always charged to 100% and don't go below 20% before charging. I benefit from the extra 15% so don't use protect battery setting. It also very useful i guess if you plan to keep your phone for more then 2 to 3 years.

It's due to the chemistry inside of lithium batteries - having a battery at 0% and 100% often can cause degradation and reduce the capacity. It's also to do with battery cycles (how many times it's gone from 0-100) if you keep your battery between 30-80% you can, in effect, double the life expectancy as your only using 50% at a time.

I wouldn't get too hung up on it though, yes it's better for the battery to stop at 80% but you might need the full 100% for your day ahead.

yes whilst charging to only 80% prolongs Battery life it may not always be feasible, if you upgrade regularly it is not as important.   Some information here https://www.techadvisor.com/article/727861/how-to-properly-charge-a-phone-battery.html
