Hi,

Can someone tell me is the A16 the next phone after the A12?

As I try & read about it, but mixed reviews, So can someone clarify please, what it can offer?

I didnt realise how old the A12 was, til I came àcross this site below,

As I was looking for something else as I was gonna pose a different question, but that can be added too!

https://www.croma.com/unboxed/these-samsung-phones-will-stop-getting-software-updates-in-2025

(Samsung smartphones that will stop getting updates in 2025

While the Galaxy A02s and Galaxy A12 have already stopped receiving software support as of January 2025, the others will gradually receive their last updates over the next few months.4 Feb 2025)

How long do I have left ?

Last update was 26 Nov 2024

What way does the ranges work

S24 is > 2024

Where does A12 start?

  • ------------------------------------

The other question is why has the underneath of the USB C port cover worn away?

I monitor battery health regularly with Battery & Device care shortcut on home screen & clear cache from my browser too

Thanks for listening & look forward to hearing from you regarding this matter!

The numbers go like this.

The first number is how "good" it is. 0 being the worst 5 being the best, sometimes samsung makes a 7. Higher number phones cost more and are usually just better.

The second number is how new it is. 6 is the current generation.

So the a12 and a16 are the same level of "goodness" for their year. But the a16 is significantly newer. In the uk, the lowest number you can usually buy is a 1. 0 phones are usually sold online only or in other countries with a lower general income.

Updates work like this.

When a phone is first released, samsung says how many years of updates it will get. Say a phone comes out and has 2 years of updates. You buy it 9 months after it comes out. Your phone has 1 year 3 months of updates before they stop.

From a little research, I think the a12 stopped getting updates in January 2025. It got 4 years of updates, came out in 2021. The cheaper A series phones also update quarterly, so 4 times per year. More expensive A series phones update each month

The S series phones go up each year. So s22, then s23, then s24, then s25.

The A series is a budget line up so it's totally separate from the naming scheme of the S series. I mentioned how they work earlier in my comment.

For the things I didn't answer, I don't know enough to confidently give you an answer.

I've never owned an a12 or a16 so can't tell you the difference between them, except that the a16 is significantly newer

The A16 is the most recent model in the A1x range. but the A17 will be released later this year.

The A16 gets considerably better support than the A12 had. It will get 6 OS updates and security updates for 6 years. It was released late last year, so it still has 5 OS updates and 5 years of security updates left. You'll find it an improvement on your A12.

If there's a way to explain this well-known fact better,
Samsung's order of arranging its Galaxy-A phones are like this:
A1x's have the simplest hardware or graphics,
A2x & A3x's are mid-ranged,
A5x's have advanced high-quality and upgraded hardware.

A-X2 is the oldest and outdated according to this year, and A-X6 is the latest and improved, since after 2024.

The last conclusion is that Galaxy-A16 is better than A12, because there's a large age gap between the release date of these two phones. 4 years in between.
The A16 also takes all the hardware features from the A25 for a better experience, which is also a big leap.
