Critical Bug with Camera Orientation on Galaxy A56

I recently purchased the new Samsung Galaxy A56 and, while I'm generally happy with the device, I've encountered a very frustrating and unexpected bug with the camera. When I take a selfie or any photo while holding the phone vertically, the saved image is saved and displayed horizontally. The preview in the camera app is fine, but the final photo is always saved incorrectly. This seems to be an issue with the image's orientation metadata, which other apps are failing to read properly because it's being written incorrectly by the camera software itself.
This is a basic function that should work flawlessly, and it's disappointing to find such a core issue on a new device. I'm surprised this wasn't addressed before release, and I urge the Samsung development team to investigate this issue and release a fix as soon as possible. Manually rotating every picture is a nuisance and detracts significantly from an otherwise positive user experience.

@Disillusioned888: I am unaware of any wider issues with the orientation of images captured using the front camera on the A56, or other Galaxy devices. Are you tilting the phone at all when you take a selfie? If you restart the phone, does the issue persist?

Hi @Disillusioned888

Could you post some examples? I have a A56 and both Still and Videos are saved with the right orientation. I tested both vertical and horizontal pictures and videos. I have viewed them with Preview, Gallery and transferred them to a laptop. The orientation is right on all situations.

Have you installed some filters, or any app that might change this? Have you changed some settings on the Camera app?

Try resetting, clearing the cache and data of the Camera app.

To reset camera:

  • Open Camera
  • Tap four dots to see Setting Cog wheel
  • Tap the Cog wheel
  • Swipe down and tap Reset Settings
  • Tap reset

To clear cache:

Settings -> Apps -> Camera -> Force stop (bottom right)

Settings -> Apps -> Camera -> Storage -> Clear cache (bottom right)

To clear data:

Settings -> Apps -> Camera -> Force stop (bottom right)

Settings -> Apps -> Camera -> Storage -> Clear data (bottom left)
