I guess the cover screen preview function is not working. also the camera app will freeze and need restarting

No issue with this one. Try to clean cache Camera app

Just tried the camera app testing all cameras including the cover camera, no issue at all

I haven't noticed such a problem on my device. Perhaps clearing app cache will improve the situation: Settings > Apps > select app > Storage > Clear cache. 

You can also report this issue in Samsung Members app > Error report. 🙂
