I'm using HDMI eARC and having the same problem. Optical only supports 5.1 at Bitstream, not Uncompressed, so in a way they're correct. BUT I bought a new HDMI eARC receiver specifically to get around this problem and it still doesn't work. It only sends 2.0 or delayed Bitstream. Not Uncompressed 5.1 as it should!

Can you raise this with Samsung support as well otherwise they won’t acknowledge that there’s a problem

I can tell you all as an owner of an LG C9 it is indeed a TV issue as some others have mentioned. There's an LG forum dedicated to the same issue. If you're passing the audio out via eArc to another device from the xbox the sound is out. It's not just the new TVs either but many older ones too. So it's widespread. I hear if you get what's called a SHARC adaptor from a US company called ThenAudio it solves the issue. It goes between the HDMIs between the receiver / soundbar and the TV. Costs around £100 though so not great. If the TVs could offer a sound sync option of - milliseconds rather than + milliseconds it would fix it, assuming that's probably not possible though.
In my case I'm now running my sound straight into my Denon reciever, but that means I can't play games in 120fps due to an issue with the Denon not passing through 120hz signals even though it's meant to. The joys....

Just adding that I'm having this same issue with my Q80r. I had been using the optical audio out on my XBox One X, but upgraded to the Series X without the optical audio option.
Noticed the audio delay on my Samsung soundbar. Bought a new Klipsch Cinema 600 for ARC support. Nope, delay is definitely coming from the TV. Can shorten it up by going PCM, but it still an easy 100 milliseconds.
So yeah, not sure what to do now. Wish Samsung could find a way to cut down the delay, but I'm not optimistic. It's both Microsoft's problem not including an optical out, and Samsung's for not making sure the expensive TV is spitting its audio out nearly fast enough.
Hoping for the best, but I'm bothered. Guess I'm glad I'm not the only one.

I'm also having the same issue. I have a Series X, Q80T connected to a Logitech Z906 system via the TV's optical SPDIF port. It's so incredibly frustrating having spent the best part of £1500 on this setup to only be able to use 2.1 audio.
Samsung, please sort this?!

Samsung are blaming other equipment. They have told me that I cannot get 5.1 via optical to my Sonos. Which is absurd. Samsung have told me that it is the optical and my Sonos that is causing the delay not where it came from!!

I have a Q90R tv with the Q80R soundbar and I experience sound lag when using my Xbox Series X and Xbox One S. This is very annoying and I hope Samsung will fix this issue soon.

I had the same issue, I solved it with a firmware update to the soundbar, using the smart thing app.

Which firmware version are you running at the moment?
My Q80R soundbar doesn't have any new firmware available and is running HW-Q80RWWB-1010.5

I have the HW-70T, firmware version 1017.5 Plug-in version 3.1.32
After this update the delay using atmos via eARC is over. My setup is like this:
Soundbar -> TV in HDMI eARC port
Xbox-> TV in HDMI game port
