In order to provide a certain number of major updates engineers must design each component like the SoC (processor, graphic unit, etc.) in a particular way to make sure they meet the Android Platform requirements for a long time, that's why newer models like S24 Series or Tab S10 Series will get up to 7 major updates. When older models were developed, long time support wasn't a concern yet, that's why it is impossible for Samsung to grant older models more software updates. It would be extremely expensive since it would require to completely develop again the entire software of those devices while, newer models's software, can meet requirements for a longer time and thus receive more updates.
Have a good day

Hello,
unfortunately Galaxy S20 is not eligible for the Android 14 / One UI 6.1 update since the software support for version upgrades has already ended.
As you can see, not all Galaxy AI features introduced this year are available on previous Galaxy phones, so as @FedeX_4823 said, hardware requirements must be met before releasing an update.
I hope you can experience more with your current device and expect even further with next Galaxy phone you are going to buy.
See you soon!

It's software, not hardware. I'm sure their programmers can make modifications necessary and the cost would be negligible Their decision was not based on cost to modify software for compatibility with older phones, it was based on their desire to force people to upgrade to new phones. It's all about how much money they can get if the majority of people purchase or upgrade to a Samsung S24 phone ($1000 x 1,000,000+ get the picture).

Hi Muffet, welcome to the Samsung Community.
Althought I understand one's need for more updates, FedeX_4823 and danitudi971 have already pointed out the objetive situation: it isn't possible to extend software versions to a hardware that is not set to accomodate it ⚙️.
That doesn't mean the S20 is old or out of service: Apps and services still work great due to retro-compability, for quite some time.
So, keep enjoying your device and do not worry too much about the latest Android OS 🙂.
Have a nice day!

They are only speculating regarding the hardware not being compatible and if not, that it would take either hardware upgrades or extensive rewrites of the software.

That's actually terrible, Samsung should be grateful for their users, but they don't.
Guess I'll be switching to iPhone. Thanks Samsung, greedy corporate.
