Can a Smart tag 2 be reset by a thief and reused tag?

I lost my Samsung Tag 2 and was able to track it to a location using my phone's camera. It was last seen on the ground in a parking lot. Staff at the location informed me that someone may have reset the tracker and taken the tag. I have the serial number, proof of purchase, and the original box for the Smart tag. I'm considering reporting it as stolen in case the thief tries to use it with my serial number but I am unsure if this will help me find my tag. I hope Samsung can release an update to prevent thieves from resetting the tag when found. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Im pretty sure it can't be used by someone else because it's registered to your Samsung account even if they try to reset it. If you remove it from your smartthings account then it can be used by someone else.

As TZ says, to fully reset the device it has to removed from your Smart things account...

Would imagine that a thief would more likely break the tracker, or remove the battery to avoid detection.

Also remember that these work by pinging the galaxy network...if the tracker is somewhere with limit traffic from people with galaxy phones...it won't ping.

Hello. Thank you for your responses. I believe that the battery was removed because the tag was ping in one specific spot and never moved from there that was the last know location.

A tracker to track things gets lost and needs to be tracked is like me forgetting to take my pills to help me to remember things.

Either life is crazy 🤪 or I am 🥴

Who knows, the silly thief might turn it on, and it may show up again on your phone.

Or probably squashed by other cars and chucked in the bin

It's still worth marking as lost / notify when found on Samsung Find just in case...you'll get a notification if any galaxy device spots it

Not everyone can afford to lose things specially having to replace them after they are lost. So I have no other choice to hope to find it or pray someone else does.

Thank you for getting back to me. I searched on Google and it suggested that long-pressing the button and remoing the battery you can reset the tag. However, it seems like that information might not be accurate. Everyone else is saying that it needs to be removed from the Smart app.
