Ask the assistant to take you to assistant settings, then go to assistant voice and sounds, at the bottom of the screen click on phone, then select full. (Please also not that if you type into the Google assistant instead of speak it won't respond with its voice to you.) Hope this helps. 😊

On your Android phone or tablet, go to Assistant settings, or open the Google Assistant app  and say, "Assistant settings".Under "Popular settings", tap Voice Match.Turn on Hey Google and set up Voice Match.

If you're experiencing issues with Google not responding or "talking" to you, here are some general troubleshooting steps you can try:

  1. Check Your Internet Connection:

    • Ensure that your device has a stable and active internet connection.
  2. Restart Your Device:

    • Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve temporary glitches. Restart your computer, smartphone, or any device you're using.
  3. Update Google Apps:

    • Make sure that your Google-related apps (such as Google Search or Google Assistant) are up to date. Outdated apps may have bugs that could be causing the issue.
  4. Check App Permissions:

    • Review the permissions granted to the Google apps. Ensure that they have the necessary permissions to access your microphone, if applicable.
  5. Clear Cache and Cookies:

    • Clear the cache and cookies in your web browser or within the Google app settings. Cached data can sometimes cause communication issues.
  6. Verify Microphone Settings:

    • If you're using voice commands, check if your device's microphone is working properly. You may need to adjust microphone settings in your device's settings.
  7. Test in Another Browser or Device:

    • If the issue persists, try using a different web browser or device to see if the problem is specific to one environment.
  8. Check for Outages:

    • Visit the Google Workspace Status Dashboard or DownDetector to check if there are any reported outages or issues with Google services.
  9. Update Device Software:

    • Ensure that your device's operating system is up to date. Software updates can sometimes address compatibility issues.
  10. Contact Google Support:

    • If none of the above solutions work, consider reaching out to Google Support for assistance. They may be able to provide specific guidance based on your situation.

Remember that specific troubleshooting steps may vary based on the device and the Google service you're using. If the problem persists, contacting Google support or checking their official help forums might provide more tailored assistance.

Same problem here, and none of these worked for me.  The recent Samsung major update killed my assistant's ability to talk, and it's hugely frustrating.

I had the same issue.. This was my solution.
Your problem might be different.. Not sure if this was answered already..
I have a Samsung s23 ultra..
Open app called Google on your phone , you will sea a beaker on the top left screen.
Tap the beaker an turn off, SGE, generic AI in Search.
(google search) will now speak back to you the results of a search , if AI is on Google search becomes dumb and you can only read AI Search results. THAT WAS MY MAIN BIF with AI searches. I am sure Google will fix that issue soon with an update .

Checked everything that everybody kindly recommended, but still no joy. Then, when google assistance was answering my question I pressed the volume UP button and WOW, it started working. The volume for google assistance was set to very low. Hope this helps somebody. Cheers 👍
