I've set my S8 Smartlock feature to be auto-unlocked when my Galaxy Watch is connected via Bluetooth. Even though my watch says it's connected, I still (sometimes) get asked to enter my unlock code. After entering it, I go into the Smartlock menu and it shows that I have smartlock set to use the watch as a trusted device. See screenshots below:
