Cant load Smartthings on Galaxy Active 2

I'm having problems installing Smarthings on my Galaxy Active 2. It did work but was slow so I didn't really use it. When I went back to it recently and noticed it was stuck on syncing. I've since deleted and reinstalled ST on both the watch and the phone. I've also tried the clearing the cache but to no avail. I do eventually get a "unable to sync data" message on the watch.

 

Everything else seems to work. all the messages, notifications and Samsung health works ok.

This may be completely separate, but the only odd thing I've noticed is that under Devices on the phone (S9+), under Directly Connected Devices / MyStatus the watch is showing as offline  along with the cloud symbol with a line through it. If I look at View Details I see it connected by bluetooth . If I try to Edit the device I can change the Room but the Location field is locked. Is this normal? My Samsung earbuds are showing as connected and on line (as I would have expected)

 

Can anyone shed some light on this?

As an update: after removing ST from watch and phone (again) I've got rid of the offline message under Devices. I'm assuming that it shouldn't be there at all, which is odd as my ear buds are showing under Directly Connected?
So now its just a case of continuous syncing data.

Not sure what to try next.

To conclude this, after talking to Samsung I've been told the Active 2 doesn't work with ST and i need to buy a new watch. I'm sure it used to and I can't find mention of it coming off support but there you go.
