This is a new problem to start on my TV

When viewing a streamed show on TV versions of the apps iPlayer or Netflix for example the screen is too dark to make out the action, making it unwatchable. Adjusting brightness or contrast has no effect, neither does settng the TV in intelligent mode or otherwise. Essentially the picture cannnot be made out. Intermittently it also happens in Freesat mode too.
