unable to use Equalizer regardless of source! Tried hold standby for 10 seconds and no difference, still greyed out!

Why on earth does every fix on my Samsung TV start with a 'let's try' - is there no definitive instructions on these devices anymore. Everything appears to be so hit and miss.
