No one wants to think about worst case scenarios. But here at the Community, we’ve got some bad news for you: one day you might lose your phone; or maybe you’ll drop it, and it will stop working completely. Take a deep breath, nothing’s happened yet. And the reason we’re thinking about these things is that, today, we’re talking about backups.

Just a quick five minutes out of your day can make a huge difference if (touch wood) something should happen to your phone. When you’ve got up-to-date backups, you’ve nothing to worry about. Everything from your precious pics and videos to your settings, contacts and even home screen can be saved.

To create backups, you’ll need to be logged into a Samsung account or a Google account on your device.

How to create backups

You have a couple of super easy options for creating backups right from your settings menu. First, head to Settings > Accounts and backups. Once you’re here, you have two options:

Please note: Samsung Cloud provides 15 GB of free storage. If you don’t have enough space, you won’t be able to create a backup.

Samsung Cloud

  1. Under Samsung Cloud, tap “Back up data”
  2. Select what you’d like to back up
  3. Once you’ve got it, tap “Back up now”
  4. Your data will be backed up. How long it takes will depend on how much data you’re backing up
  5. When you’re finished, tap “Done”

Google account

  1. Under Google account, tap “Back up data”
  2. On the next screen, you’ll be given the option to back up your photos and videos as well as other data
  3. Tap “Back up now”, and you’re done! Your backup will be created in the background
Restoring backups

If you ever need to bring your backups into play, it’s quite simple:

Samsung Cloud

  1. Head to Settings then tap Accounts and backups
  2. Under “Samsung Cloud”, tap “Restore data”
  3. If you’ve got more than one Samsung device backed up to the same account, you’ll need to select which device you want to restore
  4. Choose the apps you want to restore, then tap “Restore”

Google account

Google account backups can be used to restore your phone and all its settings, but you’ll only have this option when you’re setting up your device using the Setup Wizard.

How often do you make backups? Let us know in the comments!
