When plugging it into a USB A to C charger the screen will light up and display a grey circle and charging icon and will not progress past that point.
If I use a higher end USB C to C charger the screen will not power on but after leaving it plugged in for a while the battery seems to charge by a tiny amount because if I switch back to the USB A to C charger and hold the power and volume down buttons when the screen lights up it will display a Samsung logo and briefly display some debug text in the top left corner before powering off.
I have tried multiple official Samsung chargers and cables that I tested using my phone to no avail and I'm now at a loss as to how to fix this thing. I also tried cleaning the charger cable and the port on the device with compressed air to remove any debris and that didn't help.

Hello and welcome, sounds like you have tried the common fixes, one more to try is to gently clean the A8 charge port, I have had this issue with an old device and also laptop charge ports, basically debris overtime accumulates impacting a good connection.
Ideally, if you have a compressed air canister, if not a gentle blow and then light taps with the port pointing down.

With the device powered up, Hold the Volume down button and Power button simultaneously for 10 seconds. The screen will go off. Continue to hold buttons until the device vibrates and the Samsung logo appears. Release buttons. Device will reboot. Once done, please check if the issue is resolved.
