Are you being offered the option to enter a pin at all?

Only way to reset a device unlock code is to force reset the device using the recovery menu.

Wipes all data, but gets past the code

The only way would be to factory reset. It'll probably ask for a Google account password associated with the device; you NEED that, or you've got a brick.

*I would probably edit that image and cover the S/N.

Hello. I think this will help you. 

Hold Power and Volume Down to force restart the device(with a USB cable connected to a PC or a laptop); as soon as it restarts, hold Volume Down and Volume up until you enter the recovery mode, from there you can factory reset the device.

(Cable is required to facilitate recovery mode or download mode, at least on my device)

If you have a Google Account bound to the device, you will be required to enter the password to verify the device is yours.
