I think that the security update period should be extended. Even introducing a subscription based model after the five year free update period. We are now spending over £1000 for higher specs on our devices. I think it would cut down on e-waste if we were offered a reasonable price to have the battery replaced and that combined with an extended security update policy would ensure the lifetime of these phones would also be extended. The new phones are now so powerful they should have more longevity.

While I agree in principle, doesn't Samsung already lead in this area? For Android phones, at least.

That is true, however we are using our phones for banking, payments, keys, personal information etc. If you can afford to upgrade every few years then that's OK. But would you use a phone with no security updates? If not then what happens to these very expensive phones after five years? I think that we may be reaching a tipping point where the incremental advances year on year for new models are reaching a point where it might not be worthwhile upgrading. If a subscription model was introduced then even the second hand market would increase plus Samsung would still be making money from the subscription.

Do you often hear of people having their bank account emptied because they were using a phone that was outside the security update period? Until this happens nobody will really care much about it.
