Hi Samsung team and community,
As daily heavy users and business owners who rely on Galaxy devices for constant connectivity, we’d love a visual refresh of the status bar icons in One UI 8—specifically the mobile data indicator (4G/5G/5G UC/5G+ with up/down arrows) and the cellular signal bars.
What we’re asking for
Larger, bolder, and more visually engaging mobile data and signal icons—similar in presence and readability to iOS.
Clearer differentiation between states (idle vs active data transfer; weak vs strong signal) with improved contrast and micro‑animation or dynamic emphasis when data is active.
Better legibility at a glance, especially on high‑resolution displays and in bright outdoor light.
Consistent scaling across DPI modes and display sizes so icons never look thin or cramped.
Optional “Enhanced Status Icons” toggle in Settings > Notifications > Status bar to let users choose:
Normal (current size)
Enhanced (larger, high‑contrast)
Enhanced + Activity (larger with subtle activity cues for data)
Why this matters
Faster at‑a‑glance comprehension saves time for power users, content creators, and professionals who constantly monitor signal quality and data status.
Improves accessibility for users with visual fatigue or smaller fonts/DPI tweaks.
Delivers a more premium, modern look aligned with Galaxy’s flagship design language.
Reduces misreads between LTE/4G/5G states and minimizes eye strain during long sessions.
Suggested design details
Increase icon stroke weight by ~15–25% and physical size by ~20% within the status bar height budget.
Use clearer negative space between signal bars and a more distinct “peak bar” height to separate 3/4/5 bars instantly.
For data activity, prefer a single concise glyph that “pulses” lightly on activity (respecting battery constraints) rather than tiny arrows that are hard to see.
Maintain perfect parity in light/dark modes; ensure contrast ratio meets or exceeds WCAG AA.
Respect status‑bar density: when multiple icons are present, the enhanced set should prioritize legibility without truncating essential indicators.
Competitive insight
iOS status icons are widely praised for readability and boldness. Bringing a similarly confident visual weight to One UI 8 would make Galaxy phones feel even more premium while preserving Samsung’s design identity.
Optional extras (if feasible)
Regional carrier labels can be shortened intelligently when “Enhanced” mode is on to preserve space.
Provide a developer option to visualize real‑time RSRP/RSRQ/SINR as a small overlay when tapping the signal icon (for advanced users and field testing).
Call to action
If you support this, please upvote and comment with your device model and One UI version. Samsung UX/Framework teams: adding an “Enhanced Status Icons” option in One UI 8 before public release would deliver immediate, high‑impact polish with minimal behavioral risk.
Device context
Example screenshot attached shows current 4G+/signal presentation that can feel small and thin on dense displays.
Thank you for considering this quality‑of‑life improvement for power users and the broader Galaxy community.
