Since the first time I played Sonic Adventure DX on the old family laptop, one character
that has stuck with me through the years and has been my most favorite character in the Sonic The Hedgehog franchise has always been E-102 Gamma.
When I first saw him on the character select screen he stuck out the most from the rest of the playable cast not just from his unique robotic design but also his story.
When starting his camping, the first thing you see from Gamma’s perspective is Dr. Eggman. He states that he is the one who created Gamma to serve for himself, this is a first in the series for one of the robots created by Dr. Eggman to be playable in their own camping before the doctor even got his own!
After this the doctor sends us off to the target range where, as Gamma, have to shoot down a bunch of stuffed dolls of Tails, Knuckles and Sonic.
Exiting the target range Dr. Eggman praises us for completing it and sets us off to go against E-101 Beta, being Gamma’s older brother stated by the Doctor, to stay on board of the Egg Carrier. Gamma defeats Beta and is now granted permission to stay on the Egg Carrier.
Later on Gamma, alongside the other E series robots were sent out to collect a tailed frog where only Gamma was successful on getting the wanted one for the Doctor and because of this the rest of the robots where vaporized into nothing with the emphasis of the robot right next to Gamma staring dead straight into him before also being vaporized by the Dr. Eggman.
The Doctor now sends Gamma off to claim the bird that a girl was protecting in the jail cell. Gamma enters the wrong room and see’s E-101 Beta being reused and rebuilt with parts of him all over the floor and stares directly at him.
Gamma leaves the room and states “This is the wrong room.”
Gamma then enters the right room where the girl: Amy is found protecting the bird, Gamma demands the bird but Amy rejects his demands, she asks why he needs the bird but Gamma replies with “Data unavailable” (stating the he doesn't know either) and then Gamma asks why Amy would protect something what is useless to you and Gamma starts to act up which the bird flies directly to Gamma which snaps him out of it and decides to let them go.
After all of this Gamma is flying in the sky where he reflects on everything that has happened, images of: E-101 Beta being rebuilt, the vaporized robots, Amy and Dr. Eggman flickers by faster and faster until it stops on Dr. Eggman and its emphasized that Gamma deletes the Doctor from his memory what sets him free to decide for himself and now has decided to ‘save’ his E series friends, this scene is the most impactful and what really stuck with me when I revisited his camping years later as what he states in this context is not saving the other robots from Dr. Eggman’s control is saving the animals stuck inside of them as all of the Doctor’s robots are powered by animals.
After saving the rest Gamma ends up facing his brother E-101 Beta in a fight where Beta falls and Gamma barely keeps alive, and a white bird comes out from the Beta while Gamma limps away passing the bird and then a image starts to flicker what shows the bird Amy had with her and the white bird alongside a blue one, the image then becomes clear and Gamma instantly turns the other way but falls down and self destructs.
The white bird flies away into the distance while the camera pans out and then the bird
suddenly turns back when the screen fades to black where you can slightly see the pink bird come into frame which ends the story of E-102 Gamma.
This story and Gamma himself is one of a kind and the actions of what he did during his
time alive makes him The Unsung Hero in the Sonic The Hedgehog Franchise where he hasn't returned in a major way ever since.
This is why E-102 Gamma is my favorite Sonic character.
