LTE and calling on M51 not working since going abroad (tried everything)

### Situation
Hi there, since a recent visit to Portugal, my LTE and calling/messaging has not been working correctly. This icon '🚫' appeared on the top of my screen after a restart, at first I thought I was sim swapped, but that was not the issue. For the whole vacation I was not able to call or use 4G, but as soon as I had Wi-Fi I could use the 'calling via Wi-Fi' function and was able to receive and start calls and messages. When I got home I did a software update which is at version: M515FXXS5DWG1 / M515FOXM5DWG1 / M515FXXS5DWG1. And all of a sudden it worked again! Only for it to stop working after another restart where it worked for a full 3 days. And since then it has not been working. This means it is not a hardware or sim issue since it worked perfectly for those 3 days, so you would expect it to be a firmware issue, right? Well no, i factory resetted my phone and still it is not working.

My phone is only 3 years old, and I need 4G and calling for my work so need to buy a new one, it's also outside its guarantee, so can't just ask for a new one. A repair is possible, but what would that help? Most common solution (tried them all, trust me) is to turn off network operator, but then I get the error "Error while searching for networks" which I could not find a fix for.

It's not a hardware issue and the firmware has been resetted so that could also not be the issue. Could Samsung help me with this issue? Closest Samsung shop is like an hour drive, so I would rather not, also paying for a repair and losing my phone for 2–3 weeks is not really an option because I require it for my work. Went to different phone repair / my phone carrier shop, and they also advised me against it.

 

### Solutions tried
-Swapping sim card both ways (my sim worked on another device, but another working sim didn't work on mine)
-Network reset
-Factory reset
-Cleaned sim
-Swapped sim slot
-Resetted APN and also made own instructed by network provider
-Airplane mode for 30 seconds
-Turned roaming on and off
-Wiping the cache partition
-Turning it on and off again 🙃

 

### Useful information
-Worked until restart, started working after update, after another restart it stopped working.
-Sim is not malfunctioning since I can receive and starts calls and messages with the 'calling via Wi-Fi' function
-Can't turn off network operators (Error while searching for networks) which would be the solution to this annoying problem
-Can't change network mode to anything else than 4G/3G/2G which is not relevant but still weird I guess ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

 

### Conclusion
So you would say the problem would be in the firmware since it worked temporarily after the update which is irreversible (thanks Samsung). But at the same time it's not in the firmware, since a factory reset has been done and did not fix the issue.
Since my phone is 3 years old I don't have warranty and with a student budget it quite sucks, I could not find anyone only with exactly the same problem and hope someone here could help me :smiling-face:

Goodevening,

When you went abroad, to which country did you go and what country are you usualy in? Did you have a bundle for this country? or for the EU? What provider do you have?

Hi, I am from the Netherlands where I'm usually, and I went to Portugal for 1.5 weeks. My provider is Youfone which is on the KPN network which covers EU countries.

We can speak Dutch also if possible.  Did you contact your provider? Do they say you have a bundle for portugal?

Would like to keep it English for other people having the same issue or joining the thread if that is ok with you. Not in Portugal anymore, but I did have a bundle for it

Its fine, just remember this is a Dutch forum. Most people are Dutch, not all can read English. You should start by calling your provider maybe they can explain why it diddent work. Because you are already home its too late to test things for a solution. By example i would have bought a local simcard in Portugal to see if i works. Good odds that it would have worked.

Oh dat wist ik niet, dan wil ik het best in het Nederlands doen, haha. Provider al gebeld, maar die konden niets vinden, heb de sim al geswitcht en werkte op een ander apparaat wel dus dat is niet het probleem. Ook andere sim kaarten werken niet op mijn telefoon

Dus het probleem zit in de telefoon. Heel vervelend als een fabrieksherstel niet werkt dan is een reparatie de volgende stap.

Stuur sowieso ook even een foutrapport via de Samsung Members app > Ondersteuning > Foutrapporten. Dan kunnen de ontwikkelaars kijken of het met een update te verhelpen valt.

Maar heeft dat nog nut? Heb echt alles geprobeerd dus enige optie zou denk ik wel de firmware opnieuw flashen lijkt mij
