Switch between apps with bottom apps bar

Since the update today, when I want to switch to a recently used app using the far left bottom navigation button (the three little vertical lines), for some reason "clock", "settings", "gallery" and "calendar" are the only fixed choices, no recently used apps come up as they used to.

How do I fix that, it's beyond inconvenient!
