@evie21 I assune internet connection is fine. if you are using samsung email,select email, Menu, Gear Icon. Select email account and ensure it is synced. check the sync frequency, would not advise Manual as would have to physically refresh. If gmail go to settings,your account . In Data useage ensure sync is enabled, check days of email to sync.
If the various Troubleshooting does not work try deleting and reinstalling the app.
