I'd be interested in this answer too... With my previous phones, if I swiped the notification away from the top of the home screen, it would still show how many unread I had on the app. Now it gets rid of them! Eg. I'd get rid of the front notification to say I had an email, but the app icon would still tell me I had it - I have to keep remembering what I've tidied!!

I had that too. Now I need to keep remembering what I've swiped to read later or checking all my apps for notifications. Really regretting updating my software for this as it is so inconvenient.

This is normal behaviour for notification badges on Android Oreo, and there's no work around to change this. When you swipe away a notification on the Notification Drawer, this now clears the App notifcation badge.
Hope this helps!
This is one of the most frustrating things, notification badges are useless! Who wants a notification number when you can just see it in your notification draw!?! ... How the fact that the unread badge has been overlooked is just crazy. The unread badge is what is needed, and that's plenty you guys can do about it, if you actually wanted to. If Nova launcher had it in their skin, then Samsung can implement it into touchwiz.
It's nonsense developments like this, and the removal of actually useful features, that keep Android 2 steps behind Apple.
