Zoom Smoothing

Good afternoon all!

After having this phone for a little while and going on holiday with my girlfriend who has the iPhone 15 pro max, we took a lot of photos and video side by side.

One area I would love to see improve is the video zoom smoothness. It feels very knochy and you feel the vibration when scrolling through the zoom slider. You can see the video jumps to each zoom level at the same time as you feel that vibration.

After looking at some comparison videos online with the Vivo, Find and iPhone etc.. you can see this too.

It's almost as the slider should have some smoothing and acceleration be applied.

Samsung decides to 'lock on' at the 3,5,10 mark which then suddenly jerks as you go further.

Is anyone else feeling the same way or know of a way to make these changes and improvements?

Looking forward to the replies!

Well @AndriusP, I believe it is a widely acknowledged fact that the zoom on Samsung flagships is not the smoothest for sure, but when I record video and zoom in on my S23 Ultra, I am in the habit of hitting pause record before actually zooming in, and only continuing recording once my subject is all zoomed in and central etc. I have used an IPhone 15 Pro Max to record video, and was very disappointed to find that the device does not even have a pause record function to eliminate any unwanted zooming in in the footage. To me, there is little advantage in having the world's smoothest zoom system if you can't edit it out on the fly without stopping the actual recording, should you choose to want to do so. To me personally, a smoother zoom system on the S24 would have little advantage, but I except that it is something that some people (your good self included) would really appreciate.

Thanks for the reply. I agree the pause function is great to have, although I haven't found myself using it much yet. I also found today that the zoom itself is very smooth, problem is that when you zoom, Samsung decides to 'lock on' at the 3,5,10 mark which then suddenly jerks as you go further. Silly really, but doubt it's something they will change

I understand what you mean and I had to try it on mine but when I pinch to zoom in and out it doesn't seem to want to lock in those predefined zoom levels. I can tell when the physical lense is switching due change of quality etc and slight switch but not at 3x for example. It's not as smooth as an iPhone for sure.

Hi @AndriusP

The stock camera needs some refinements. There is already talks of an update for next month that will improve the camera.

April will usher in a major camera update involving white balance and telephoto image quality.

Yeahhh it's like it jumps when it switches to a different camera lens. Looks horrible when you watch the video back.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Actually no, we figured out it's the zoom slider which makes the zoom choppy when simply zooming, not switching lenses. This does not happen when using two fingers to zoom , only using the zoom slider, it 'snaps' to every single .01 zoom level 🙃 silly Samsung

Try pro video mode. It is smooth and allows you to zoom in up to 10x
