Hi,

I am not sure if Samsung dev watch this forum but anyway, here is my problem:

On my Note 9, the S pen translation works very well:

"Qui non c'e nessun Harry Potter!" --> "There is no Harry Potter here!"

The problem is with my new phone, Samsung S23 Ultra, when something is between " ", it is not translated at all!

I  have seen this with  different input languages (spanish, italian, etc.)

Could someone fix this bug?

Thanks

Hi there,
Did you tried the clear cache partition recovery process?

The traditional Italian guillemet is no longer used in modern-day text. The preferred quotation mark is the same as in the UK ("..."). The single quotation marks (‘…’) are used for nested quotations.

That's why the translation doesn't work properly.

"QUI NON C'È NESSUN HARRY POTTER"

The workaround is to use the keyboard translator (which uses a different translation service to the pen)

This isn't a bug per se. It's a limitation in the language file the S pen uses for the target language. It really needs to be the same one the keyboard translator uses.

It says powered by Google translate on what you are using

I don't think that it has anything to do with my translation prob. on the S23 Ultra.

Thanks

Ok but it works with my Note 9 using the S Pen (see first image).

It is only with the S23 Ultra that it is not working like I would (see second image).

So if it is a voluntary change, it must have been implemented in the last 5 years. Not sure if it is the period you refer when you said "in modern-day text"?

Not sure about the workaround. The "force" of the translation initiated by the S Pen, is that it can be used in virtually any application. In my case, reading a book in Libby. Not sure how to use the keyboard translator in this case.

Thanks

Yes, I suppose that any translation initiated with the Samsung Translate app for the S-Pen use Google Translate for the effective translation (probably the S-Pen is only used to select the text).

To my knowledge it is not possible to select the translation back end that is used by the S-Pen app. ?

In fact if there were possible options to set, it could have options concerning the quotation mark (would be good).

Thanks

Hi @Dan9911

Unfortunately no Samsung Developments do not monitor these forum pages.

You can send to Samsung via your Samsung Members App however.

Daily Driver > Samsung Galaxy s²⁵ Ultra 512Gb ~ Titanium Black.

The advice I offer is my own and does not represent Samsung’s position.
I'm here to help. " This is the way. "

Yes, the pen is purely used to highlight the text to be translated and is restricted to a very limited number of language packs. The (Samsung) keyboard, however, has the ability to use the Google translation service, where the choice of language packs is considerably larger. The comparison language packs must differ slightly too, because obviously the pen method can't recognise the guillemet, whereas the keyboard translator can. This needs to change. Both pen method and keyboard method should really utilise the same language packs and service.
Your old Note 9 must have access to a service that recognises traditional Italian punctuation.
